All these services listed above are available and utilized at Siwiec Chiropractic in the Jackson New Jersey office. From listening to patients who have been to other Chiropractors, it seems that a lot of these services are not utilized. Many patients who utelize other chiropractors actually only get heat, electric muscle stimulation and an adjustment. We will utilize any therapy necessary to get you better as fast as possible, even if we are not getting paid for them. Our patients are scheduled in 30 minute blocks so your treatment will not be rushed like in busy high output Chiropractic Offices.

Below you will find explainations of the different services offered to patients:

  • Chiropractic Adjustments: The heart of the chiropractic treatment is the adjustment or manipulation. Each adjustment is patient specific and can range from diversified methods to gentile movements in order to increase joint ranges of motion. Diversified adjustments incorporate an applied high velocity low amplitude force in the direction of the restricted joint and will usually produce a cavitation of the joint which is the popping sound that comes from nitrogen gas being released from the synovial fluid in the joint due to the pressure change. Low force adjustments incorporate repetitive gentile movements of a joint past the joints current range of motion in order to gain more movement. These procedures are important because a lot of pain arising from neuro-musculo-skeletal origins is due to joint restrictions or subluxations.
  • Myofascial Release (Deep Tissue Massage):
This is a procedure which is not incorporated into all Chiropractic treatments but should be. Muscle spasms and knots are one of the most common pain causing problems. They can arise form an injury, overuse, and bad posture or from other causes. When an injury is sustained, the bodies natural response is to send the muscles around it into spasm to guard the area, yet these spasmed muscles often do not return to their normal state when the injury is healed. Spasms that do not return to normal can then turn into knots which are tight bands or palpable lumps in the muscle that are usually painful to touch. Inside these knots and spasms are many nerve endings which send pain signals to the brain. Pain perception is different for each individual and can be range from a minor annoyance to a constant debilitating pain which interferes with every aspect of ones life.

Myofascial Release is a form of deep tissue massage which utilizes sliding repetitive pressure over a muscle as it is stretches. This is usually done with a massage lotion and may have different medicines in it. It is one of the best ways to break up a muscle knot or release a muscle spasm.

  • Electric Muscle Stimulation:
EMS is a physical therapy procedure which incorporates electrical impulses at the same frequency that motor nerves use to rapidly contract the muscle. EMS is used to relieve muscle spasms, decrease muscle knots, increase circulation and decrease pain.

  • Ultrasound:
Therapeutic ultrasound is a form of deep heat therapy created by sound waves. When applied to soft tissues and joints, the sound waves help reduce swelling, increase blood flow, and decrease pain and stiffness. When applied to muscle spasms and knots it helps to reduce the spasm and break up the knot, especially when combined with deep tissue massage and stretching.

Ultrasound can be combined with different medicines if needed to push the medicine through the skin into the underlying tissues. This procedure is called phonophoresis. Examples of phonophoresis would be aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAIDS, prescription steroids like dexamethasone (instead of being injected) DMSO, or any other medicine whose molecules are small enough to pass through the skin. Ultrasound therapy can be done by lightly gliding the probe over the affected area or with massage like pressure combined with stretching to maximize results.

  • Traction, Distraction and Spinal Decompression:
Traction is the axial stretching of the body to expand joints apart in order to increase the range of motion and mobility. It is usually associated with the spine to which it offers benefits for herniated discs, spinal tendons, joints muscles and ligaments. There are many different forms of traction but most offer similar benefits. Some will use large expensive traction machines as a marketing tool but the truth is that most traction no matter how it is done is similarly beneficial. At Siwiec Chiropractic a huge benefit is that we will teach you methods to manually distract yourself at home. So instead of 10 minutes of traction 3 days a week you can have hours of distraction every day. This is a tremendous benefit to ailments treated with distraction.

  • Heat/Cold Therapy:
Heat relaxes muscle spasms and other structures and increases blood flow to the applied area. Heat should not be used on acute injuries, only chronic ones. Cold reduces inflammation and pain in the applied area and is usually used for acute injuries.

  • Therapeutic Exercises:
Therapeutic Exercises are important in the recovery from many injuries or chronic problems. Most people continuing with chiropractic care should have a prescribed exercise regimen. These exercises are very important in strengthening the muscles which may have caused the initial problem.

  • Stretching Exercises:
Stretching is also very important in the treatment of many problems. Since many problems occur as a result of muscles that are overly tight, once your doctor has diagnosed your muscular imbalance you should follow the prescribed stretching regimen.

A big part of our patient satisfaction at Siwiec Chiropractic is that we always give our patients a comprehensive explaination of what their particular diagnosis is and exactly what we are going to do to fix the problem. We constantly hear statements like "my last chiropractor didn't explain any of this to me, they just told me that I have to come in a certain amount of times or it wont work and I never really knew what was wrong with me or what they were doing". Patient education is a huge part of reaching your goal in getting back to optimal health. Without prescribing home stretching and exercises and explaining ergonomics of daily activities many patients will never fully recover.
